Pillar Procedure

Start the New Year Off by Improving Sleep with the Pillar® Procedure!

POSTED ON WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 13, 2016 AT 11:49 AM by Dr. Mark Stein

Getting a good night’s sleep is essential if you want to truly feel at your best. While you sleep, your body is at work repairing and recovering from a long day in preparation for tomorrow. Though sleep is so important to our day-to-day lives, many patients endure nights of interrupted sleep due to snoring and sleep apnea. These conditions not only ruin your rest, but they can also lead to serious health problems, including the increased risk of stroke and heart issues. At New York Oral & Maxillofacial SurgeryDr. Stein can reduce the effects of snoring and mild sleep apnea with the Pillar® Procedure.

How Does The Pillar® Procedure Treat Snoring?

The Pillar® Procedure targets extra or redundant soft palate tissues in the back of your airway that cause vibrations during sleep, also known as snoring. During your Pillar® Procedure, Dr. Stein will place small implants into the soft palate to stimulate scar tissue, adding structure to soft palate tissue and limiting the extent of vibrations during sleep. These implants measure less than an inch and are not visible. Over time, palate tissues begin to stiffen, resulting in less vibrations and less airway obstruction to reduce snoring and sleep apnea.

How Extensive Is The Pillar® Procedure?

The Pillar® Procedure is a minimally invasive technique that lasts 20 minutes or less. This NYC snoring treatment requires local anesthesia to place your implants and does not require extensive healing time afterwards. Patients can resume their daily routine immediately after completing treatment. The implants used during your Pillar® Procedure do not interfere with swallowing or speech and cannot be felt.

How Long Until I See Results?

Patients usually see substantial improvements in their sleep within three months of undergoing snoring treatment in NYC. Some even begin to see snoring reduction within three weeks of their Pillar® Procedure. Once your implants are placed, they provide long-lasting results, so you can sleep better for years to come.

Mark Stein, D.D.S., M.D. and his staff encourage patients to express any questions or concerns you may have about the Pillar® Procedure, as well as any of our other procedures. You can contact us at our New York office at 212.888.4760, or you may make an appointment online for a personal consultation with Dr. Stein.

Do you get 8 hours of sleep a night but still wake feeling exhausted? Do your loved ones complain of your disruptive, chronic snoring? Has the lack of a restful sleep affected your performance at school or work? You may be experiencing symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea, a condition that plagues over 12 million Americans.  This illness is a sleep disorder that causes a pause in breathing when airways are obstructed. Sleep apnea leads to increased fatigue and an increased risk for certain illnesses, including heart disease, diabetes, and liver impairment. With side effects of moodiness, decreased attention, and drive, sleep apnea can affect all aspects of your life, including the quality of your relationships as well as your performance in work or school. At New York Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, our oral surgeon, Dr. Mark Stein, offers the innovative Pillar Procedure for sleep apnea, helping you obtain a more restful sleep.

Taking only 20 minutes to complete, the Pillar Procedure in NYC works by placing several tiny implants into the soft palate. These implants stiffen the palate tissue, reducing the vibrations that cause snoring and airway obstruction. The treatment is an out-patient procedure requiring only local anesthesia and no downtime post-op.  The Pillar Procedure will reduce snoring up to 80%! After this procedure, patients report a more restful sleep, increased alertness, and an overall lifestyle improvement.

Pillar Procedure in NYC Corrects Snoring

POSTED ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 2014 AT 7:23 PM by Dr. Mark Stein

Have you awoken after a full night’s sleep feeling exhausted? Does your partner complain of a restless night’s sleep because of your snoring?  You may be experiencing the effects of a loose soft palate. A loose soft palate is a contributing factor for 4 out of 5 chronic snorers. During sleep, excessive tissue can collapse and leave pressure on the soft palate, this pressure causes vibrations resulting in loud snores. At New York Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, we offer the Pillar Procedure, a technique that offers an 85% success rate in correcting snoring!

The Pillar Procedure stiffens your soft palate to reduce vibrations by placing tiny implants into your palate. These tiny implants are not visible and cannot be felt. In time, your body will form tissue around the implant, stabilizing your palate, eliminating vibrations, and correcting snoring. The Pillar Procedure is performed in-office, under local anesthesia, and only takes 20 minutes to complete. This minimally invasive procedure requires little downtime, and will not interfere with swallowing or speech.

Although some patients report seeing improvements as early as a few weeks, full results will not be seen for a few months. The results are definitely worth the wait! Patients will notice a snoring reduction up to 80% after the procedure, leading to a quieter, more restful sleep. The results from the Pillar Procedure are permanent.

Experience a more relaxing sleep after the Pillar Procedure in NYCDr. Stein and our staff at New York Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Center welcome any questions you may have about sleep apnea and the Pillar Procedure. Contact our office at 212.888.4760, or request your appointment online today!

Pillar Procedure in NYC will Improve Heart Health!

POSTED ON FRIDAY, DECEMBER 06, 2013 AT 9:47 AM by Dr. Mark Stein

Do you sleep regularly, but never feel well rested? Do you wake up during your sleep gasping for air? Are you a chronic snorer? If you answered “yes” to these questions, you may be suffering from obstructive sleep apnea. Sleep apnea in NYC is a condition that pauses your breathing during sleep, anywhere from 5-30 times per hour! Caused by a narrowing of the airway, sleep apnea is more common in patients who are overweight, but can affect others. This condition will not only prevent a restful night’s sleep, but also cause high blood pressure, stroke, and even heart failure! Yes, the effects of sleep apnea can be fatal, and unfortunately, one in five adults suffer from at least minor sleep apnea.

When suffering from sleep apnea, you are more likely to have high blood pressure. Other heart conditions you may suffer are:

  • Atrial fibrillation (irregular heart beat)
  • Bradycardia (slow heart rate)
  • Coronary artery disease (hardening of the arteries)
  • Heart attack

If obstructive sleep apnea is left untreated, risk of heart failure is extremely high.

Treat sleep apnea with the Pillar Procedure! Minimally invasive, the Pillar Procedure in NYC only takes twenty minutes, but delivers long lasting effects with no downtime. The procedure places small implants, less than an inch in length, into soft palate tissues. The implants are not visible, cannot be felt, and won’t interfere with swallowing or speech. Some patients report having results from the Pillar Procedure in New York as early as a few weeks; however, sometimes it can take up-to three months to see the full results.

The results of the Pillar Procedure are well worth the wait! Patients notice a significant decrease in snoring intensity, leading to a more satisfying sleep. A noticeable decrease in the patient’s hypopnea index will also occur, helping to improve the functions of the heart.

Sleep better and take care of your heart by having the Pillar Procedure in NYC! Dr. Stein and our staff at New York Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Center welcome any questions you may have about sleep apnea and the Pillar Procedure. Stop Snoring with the Pillar Procedure in NYC!

POSTED ON THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 2013 AT 10:54 AM by Dr. Mark Stein

Do you find yourself losing sleep trying to catch some Z’s next to a loved one who snores? You can nudge your partner in hopes that they’ll slightly wake and stop snoring long enough for you to fall asleep, but the real problem will still remain. While many of us like to poke fun at our loved ones falling asleep and snoring loudly in front of the television during a quick nap, many do not realize that snoring can actually lead to serious medical conditions.

While snoring seems harmless, it can actually be a sign of a more serious condition, sleep apnea. Sleep apnea occurs when the soft palate tissue at the back of the throat relaxes too much during sleep. When the soft palate becomes too restful, it causes vibrations in the tissues that lead to a snoring sound. There are two different types of sleep apnea, Obstructive and Central.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea: Narrowing of the airway is very dangerous, and if serious enough, can eventually lead to obstructive sleep apnea. During obstructive sleep apnea, the soft palate can collapse into the throat, partially or totally blocking the airway. When this happens, breathing comes to a halt until you re-awake. Often times however, you will not even realize you are waking up repeatedly throughout the night due to obstruction of your airway. Since your brain and body are not receiving sufficient oxygen, if left untreated, sleep apnea can lead to significant health issues, such as fatigue, heart problems, hypertension, even stroke.

Central Sleep Apnea: Unlike obstructive sleep apnea, central sleep apnea means breathing is disrupted regularly during sleep because the brain does not signal your body to breath. While central sleep apnea can affect anyone, it is more common in people who have certain medical conditions or who are on certain medications. In addition, central sleep apnea can occur alone, or in conjunction with obstructive sleep apnea.

At the New York Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery of New York, our NY oral surgeon, Dr. Mark Stein, has helped patients breathe easy with the innovative pillar procedure. The Pillar Procedure can treat chronic snoring, as well as mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea.  Performed in as little as twenty minutes, the Pillar Procedure is non-invasive  and designed to provide long lasting relief.

During the Pillar Procedure in NYC, Dr. Stein will place three small implants inside your soft palate tissue. These implants add structural support to help stiffen the soft palate. Over time, your body will naturally form tissue around these implants, adding stability to the soft palate and preventing it from becoming too relaxed. The Pillar Procedure in NYC can be done using mild anesthesia and takes about 20 minutes to complete.

Enjoy a soundless sleep, and take control of your health with the Pillar Procedure! Dr. Stein and our staff at New York Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Center welcome any questions you may have about sleep apnea and the Pillar Procedure in NYC. You may contact our office at 212.888.4760, or you may request an appointment online for your personal consultation with Dr. Stein.
