When there’s not enough bone in the jaw to support dental implants, Dr. Stein uses bone grafting to help create a stable anchor for the placement of implants. But when the maxillary sinuses (located on either side of the nose) are too close to the jawbone, there may not be enough room for the placement of dental implants. Dr. Stein can perform a sinus lift in order to move the sinus membrane upward, creating enough space to place a bone graft that will later support your dental implant.
What is a sinus lift?
A sinus lift is a specialized bone grafting procedure that can prepare the jaw for dental implants when the sinuses are too close to the jawbone. By lifting the sinuses away from the jawbone, adequate space can be created for the bone to grow in order to support dental implants.
How is a sinus lift performed?
Using advanced surgical techniques, Dr. Stein makes an incision to create a small window in the jawbone. This allows Dr. Stein to access and lift the sinus membrane on the other side of the window. By gently moving the sinus membrane away from the jawbone, Dr. Stein creates space for the bone grafting materials. Once the bone graft is completed, the graft will be allowed time to integrate with the jawbone and heal before dental implants are placed. While individual circumstances vary, in most cases, Dr. Stein will place dental implants 6 to 9 months after sinus lift surgery.
Patients with some bone but not enough to place a dental implant can benefit from an “Internal Sinus Lift.” This is a procedure where Dr. Stein places the bone graft under your sinus and a dental implant at the same time. Dr. Stein is one of a handful of international specialists able to perform this procedure. The “Internal Lift” minimizes the risk of a full Sinus lift as well as shortens the treatment time required for the completion of the healing and implant process, so everything is completed in one step.
What bone grafting material is used for a sinus lift?
Dr. Stein will conduct a thorough examination that may include x-rays or CT scans to determine the best treatment options for each individual patient. In some cases, Dr. Stein may use the patient’s own bone, harvested from either within the mouth or another area of the body, such as the hip or below the knee. In other cases, synthetic materials may be used. Dr. Stein is one of the few oral surgeons in the United States to use INFUSE®, an advanced new bone grafting material that uses a special protein to promote bone growth. Dr. Stein may also use growth factors from a patient’s own blood to help foster healing. Dr. Stein will assess your individual situation and discuss all the options with you.

You did an amazing job on my teeth. I could not have imagined that one day my teeth/smile would look this great. Thanks again for all your hard work. :)
My dentist, whom I regard highly, recommended Dr. Mark Stein for a complicated extraction that she would not perform. I was scared of this procedure, but Dr. Mark Stein made it easy—a walk in the park. The staff was extremely friendly and the entire experience was beyond my expectations. I give Dr. Stein an A+.
Best place ever to go get your wisdom teeth pulled. They were so pleasant as soon as you met them and made sure you were comfortable and even followed up after hours at home to make sure I was ok and had no more concerns. I didn't feel a thing. Dr. Stein and his staff are great!
Dr. Stein is a wonderful surgeon. I had a true fear of having teeth pulled, to the extent that I have had fillings and then root canals done on my wisdom teeth. Please let me advise don't do that. Instead, visit Dr. Stein. All of his work for me has been painless, fast, friendly, and professional. His office and staff are knowledgeable, efficient, and very pleasant. I recommend Dr. Stein without reservation. Look no further.
I was referred to Dr. Stein for extraction and a dental implant. He was extremely kind, listened to my concerns and explained everything thoroughly. The procedure was totally painless and I had no problems afterwards unlike my other dental experiences. I would highly recommend Dr. Stein to anyone needing an oral surgeon. A+++
Dr. Stein is an outstanding oral surgeon. He is extremely friendly and gentle, called me the evening after my surgery to make sure I was doing OK, and took plenty of time to explain what he was doing and what to expect. I recommend him highly.
